Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for antibodies and collagen formation, tissue repair (including some reoxidation effects), metabolism of phenylalanine, tyrosine and folate, utilization of iron and carbohydrates, synthesis of fats and proteins, maintenance of immune function, hydroxylated 5-hydroxytryptamine, maintenance of vascular integrity, and promotion of non-heme iron absorption. Vitamin C also has antioxidant properties. Anti-free radicals, inhibit the formation of tyrosinase, so as to achieve whitening, light spot effect.

In human body, vitamin C is a high efficiency antioxidant, which is used to reduce the oxidative stress of ascorbate peroxidase (ascorbate peroxidase) sch. Vitamin C is also involved in many important biosynthesis processes.

Since most mammals synthesize vitamin C from the liver, there is no deficiency; But a few animals, such as humans, primates, and marmots, cannot synthesize it themselves and must be ingested through food or drugs.

Vitamin C can be oxidized or reduced in the body, so it can be used as both a hydrogen supplier and a hydrogen receiver, playing an important role in the REDOX process in the body.

Function and Application

Promote antibody formation. High levels of vitamin C help reduce cystine from food proteins to cysteine, which in turn leads to the synthesis of antibodies.

Promote iron absorption. Vitamin C promotes iron absorption by reducing hard-to-absorb trivalent iron to easily absorbable bivalent iron. In addition, it can also make sulfhydryl groups such as ferrous complexase active in order to play an effective role, so vitamin C is an important auxiliary drug in the treatment of anemia.

Promote the formation of tetrahydrofolate. Vitamin C can promote folic acid reduction to tetrahydrofolic acid to play a role, so it also has a certain effect on megaloblastic anemia.

Maintain the activity of sulfhydrase.

Detoxification. After supplementing a large amount of vitamin C in the body, it can alleviate the toxic effects of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic on the body.

Prevent cancer. Many studies have shown that vitamin C can block the synthesis of carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds and prevent cancer. [2]

Scavenging free radicals. Vitamin C can be converted into semi-dehydroascorbate and dehydroascorbate by providing electrons step by step. The process of removing supernegative oxygen ion (O2-), hydroxyl free radical (OH-), organic free radical (R-) and organic peroxy group (ROO-) in the body can be used. Tocopherol free radical is rereduced to tocopherol, and the ascorbic acid free radical generated by the reaction can be reduced to ascorbic acid by NADH2 enzyme under certain conditions.

Food Sources

Dietary sources of vitamin C are widely found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes, cauliflower, bell pepper, dark leafy vegetables, bitter melon, citrus, grapefruit, apples, grapes, kiwi, fresh dates and so on are rich in vitamin C.

Do not take

Vitamin C is appropriate to take on an empty stomach, but it should be noted that patients with digestive tract ulcers had better use with caution, so as not to stimulate the ulcer surface, resulting in ulcer deterioration, bleeding or perforation.

People with poor kidney function should not take more vitamin C. People with poor kidney function who take excessive vitamin C for a long time may cause excessive stomach acid, gastric reflux, and even urinary stones. In particular, people with kidney deficiency should take less vitamin C. This is because excess vitamin C can be excreted in the urine. However, before this happens, it is first changed in the kidney and then excreted. High doses of vitamin C can strain the kidneys. This can lead to kidney disease patients who are overloaded and their kidneys are even weaker.

After taking a large amount of vitamin C, do not suddenly stop the drug, if sudden withdrawal will cause drug withdrawal, aggravate the symptoms or relapse, should be gradually reduced until complete withdrawal.

Vitamin C should not be combined with isoniazid, aminophylline, streptomycin, penicillin and sulfonamides. Otherwise, the efficacy of the above drugs will be reduced or ineffective due to the acidic environment.

Vitamin C is destructive to vitamin B12. Especially if you take a lot of vitamin C, it will promote the excretion of vitamin B12 and folate in the body. So when you take a lot of vitamin C, be sure to take enough of these two vitamins.

Vitamin C combined with aspirin enteric-coated tablets will accelerate the excretion and reduce the efficacy.

Do not take ginseng while taking vitamin C.

The combination of vitamin C and folic acid also weakens the effects of each. If the treatment of anemia must be used, can be used intermittently, not at the same time.

Taking medicines carelessly can lose vitamin C in the body. If you do not have the doctor's permission, in addition to damaging your health, it will also cause the loss of vitamin C in the body.

Vitamin C tablets should be kept away from light in a cool place to prevent deterioration and failure.

Don't take large amounts of vitamin C. Large amounts of vitamin C are not toxic. However, if you take too much, you may suffer from diarrhea, excessive urination, kidney stones, and skin rash. If the above symptoms occur due to excessive use or cause stomach upset, pantothenic acid, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms, you should reduce the dosage or stop taking it temporarily.
